las iguanas – nottingham

I was kindly invited by Las Iguanas in Nottingham to check out their interior makeover and try their new menu, I’d been to Las Iguanas before in Leicester, but I was never blown away by the food or the service. I was hoping that Nottingham’s branch would be different, and maybe change my opinion.

As soon as we walked into the restaurant there was an incredible jazzy, fresh vibe, and who doesn’t love a bit of jazz on a Wednesday night?

It was such a clean, cool setting. I can’t wait for the Leicester branch to up their game!

Bread board

“Sliced ciabatta, jalapeño cornbread & pão de queijo with dunking chipotle butter, olive oil & balsamic”

I am ALL about bread, even if my digestive system isn’t. I loved everything about this starter, the smoky dip, the corn bread, and I’m a sucker for balsamic and oil. The dough balls had a little surprising of cheese which left me wanting more, this starter was the perfect size to share between two people.

“These dough balls are as good, no, better than Pizza Express” – Nat Ling, 2018

Tortilla chips & dips

“Spice-dusted corn chips with roasted tomato salsa, habanero & pepper salsa & green tomatillo & jalapeño salsa”

I was pretty underwhelmed by the tortilla chips I hate to say, mainly because they lacked cheese which to me makes the nachos. After checking over the menu for this review, I realised I accidentally ordered the vegan ones!

I imagine they will taste much better topped with the dairy dream. The dips were lovely, the green one was full of chillis and super spicy, so if you’re into the heat this is for you!

I’m not going to lie – when my plate hit the table I wasn’t overly impressed. Don’t get me wrong, the presentation was top notch but thinking about cauliflower and sweetcorn, I don’t think rich and tasty. Boy, was I wrong. Adding smoked cheese to any vegetable is a good way to go, but I enjoyed this so much that I saved some to take home, just to I could experience the first bite again! This was recommended by the host, and I’m going to find it pretty hard to not order it every single time I go!

We were also kindly given the opportunity to make our own Caipirinha, I can’t believe how easy they are to make!

All you need is Magnifica Cachaça, lime, sugar and a lot of ice! I was unlucky enough to be driving to this event, but I can’t wait to make some at home for my next girls night, insanely delicious and so cheap to make too!

Huge thanks again to Las Iguanas for having us, I cant wait to go back and order the quinotto again!

I was invited by Las Iguanas to review their new menu in return for a honest review. Images and words are all my own.

I quit my job…

We as a generation, have been scared into the idea of saving for a house, getting a well paid job, a degree, being social, eating healthy, finding the one, going to the gym regularly, pursuing your dreams and another 137 things by our next birthday.

I sacrificed myself to this life for a few years, I was super careful with money and made sure to put a good chunk of my wages into savings, my mortgage and I just felt I had nothing to show for it. Why was I being so careful? I wasn’t even planning on buying a house when I started my mortgage scheme. What if something happens to me next week and all this pre-planning was for nothing? Things in my life recently have truly made me realise that life is too short, and we should all be able to take a stab at making our dreams come true.

Lame I know.

But at the age of 24, I don’t feel like I have achieved what I wanted. I know this a common feeling amongst our generation, us millennials *vom*, what with social media shoving successful beautiful humans in our face resulting in us normal beings feeling like a failure.

I’m over it, it’s time I started doing what I intended with my 20’s.

At 18, I wanted to run away from everything and explore the world, seeing the views most of us only get to see in pictures and documenting everything via my blog. It wasn’t until the end of last year that I started to see my life a little more clearly.

At 24, I was well paid, I had a good job sort-of in the direction of what I wanted to do for a career… but I still had this feeling of just running away, catching a one-way flight and finally seeing white sand beaches, temples, mountains…

It wasn’t until I quit my job that I knew what I actually wanted.

I still want to travel, of course. I still want to see everything, literally go anywhere I have never been before. But suddenly it didn’t feel like running away, it felt like the next stage in my life. At 18 I wanted to live out of a backpack and go find myself, when in reality I would have come home with no direction (I would have had hella good insta pics though). I wasn’t in that place anymore. It wasn’t until I actually began to plan my next adventure that I realised that.

I had an amazing job at De Montfort University. I was tasked to create digital content to advertise the Business and Law courses we have/had to offer, I had the opportunity to go to New York for work, help behind the scenes on a TV advert, get great experience on video & photography. In addition to that I had a hilarious team, great pay, a good pension, I was able to walk to work with my love… hmm, maybe I made a mistake?

I kid. (at least I hope)

I decided to pack in all my creature comforts to attempt the unpredictable world that is freelance, terrifying I know. I felt that when I was working full-time, running a netball team, going Spanish class, doing household chores and trying to socialise I never had time to let my brain run free and create art and I was often creatively constipated, make sense? Hopefully I’m motivated enough to actually get some designs printed, get an Etsy store going and get shit done!

I wrote a post a while ago about a few of my favourite illustrators and how I felt so inspired by them, and how I wanted to be just like them. But it’s about time I stop talking about what I want to do and just do it, right? and as for the travelling, I have loads planned this year, mostly looking forward to Canada in May (eeeek!), Mexico at some point, my gal wants to celebrate her bday in Bali and I need to plan a trip to the USA with my love.

So here I am, in 2018, trying to make my dreams come true. I just need to remember that my goals aren’t a race, if I don’t achieve them all in 2018, it doesn’t mean I’ve failed. I’m planning my 20’s and my 20’s are for experimenting, let’s leave the serious stuff to my 30’s… maybe.

Black Iron – Winstanley House

Black Iron – Winstanley House

Something that definitely helps me to get through my 9-5 lifestyle during the winter months is having a dinner reservation, trust me, there’s nothing better.

Surely everyone I know must feel the same satisfaction I do knowing you’re going to get a top notch dinner, with no cooking preparation or cleaning after! IT’S HEAVEN!

I’d never been to Winstanley House, and after arriving I was so disappointed that I hadn’t gone sooner. I never imaged that in Braustone, Leicester this beautiful manor would be tucked away ready to feed me some incredible treats 😍

As soon as we got there, we were led to a bar area whilst our table as being prepared. I never thought the decor of a building would be make me feel so incredibly underdressed, and I had actually made an effort! The decor was exquisite. I felt like I was in a film, or like a celebrity, a successful business woman all rolled into one. I sat down with my grapefruit gin and ginger beer wondering what could possibly make me feel any happier, and then we were called to our table!

Starter: Beetroot salad with honey & hazelnut

This was incredibly refreshing, so flavoursome which I really didn’t expect. The walnuts complimented the beetroot perfectly, giving it a rich at satisfying flavour, I felt if I’d had any more it might have ruined my main! Beautifully balanced!

Main: Courgette flan with cauliflower purée, ash baked sweet potato & roasted vegetables

Ahhh I loved this so much, when I first saw the dish I did think “omg I need twice this much” because I’m a little piggy, but the flavours were incredible. The courgette flan was actually rather hearty, and paired with the potatoes and roast vegetables I was in heaven. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten a meal so slow, I wanted to savour every bite.

Dessert: Tea & Cake victoria sponge cake, strawberries & earl grey ice cream

Considering I’m a savoury over sweet type of person, this dessert was my favourite part of the meal. The early grey ice-cream was so interesting, I wish you could buy it from the shop! (if you can and I’m unaware someone please tell me). I always find tea flavoured things quite underwhelming, but there was no denying that this tasted like earl grey, and it wasn’t sickly which was my first fear. I would 100% go back just to have this again.

Overall, I really enjoyed this meal, it was nice going to quality over quantity for a change, as I tend to be the girl that likes a huge portion for under a fiver! I’d definitely recommend Black Iron for an anniversary meal, birthday celebration or a treat yourself day.

Considering the location, presentation and quality of the food Black Iron’s pricing is incredibly fair. All this for the small price of £22, and you get to feel super fancy just being there for free!

We haven’t found the house yet (lol), but we are looking every minute of every day to see what’s online. Does anyone else find it baffling that estate agents want professional people that work full-time but too many close at 5 and don’t open weekends?

My other favourite situation is when a lovely new house is listed…

"Ohhh, this is lovely! Let me give them a call"

"Good morning (insert estate agents name), How can I help?"

"Hi! I saw you've just listed a 2 bed house on Blahblah road and I would love to book a viewing as soon as you can"

"Ohh.. really sorry that house has just been reserved"

"Oh? But it was put online 10 minutes ago?"

"Yep it's gone"

But now that’s off my chest, I can show you all the crazy, sick, beautiful, lovely, exciting things that I’m going to buy for this fancy new pad I haven’t found yet…

Eyelash Fringe Shower Curtain £10

Oh so insta darling, I cannot wait to dance in the shower and feel like a princess wrapping myself in this beautiful peachy dream. What a bloody steal for £10!! I want to buy it now, but I need to make sure the house I get has a shower curtain (#goals)

Marston Hanging Mirror £40

I absolutely love a Marston mirror, I love anything vintage, leather looking and rusty so clearly it’s right up my street. John Lewis sell a lot of mirrors like this, but I’m getting mine from Fashion World as its a steal at £40! I probably shouldn’t put this in the bathroom with a frilly shower curtain…

Heather Grey Jersey Duvet Cover £45.50

Of course Urban Outfitters made another appearance…

Can you even image how soft this is gonna feel? JERSEY MATERIAL!

I love how minimal this is, and I think Nat will approve too as he loves a bit of soft grey. How cruel would I be to make him sleep in a floral colourful duvet every night? To be honest I don’t think he would even notice!

GARNES over-the-door mirror £39

If you don’t go on a trip to IKEA and eat Swedish meatballs are you actually even moving out?

There is no doubt in my mind that my new home will feature a lot of IKEA bits, I mean, every time I go there I buy numerous candles and tons of tupperware… but maybe I should get some stuff I actually need!

This mirror is brilliant, for the obvious fact that it hangs over the door and is space efficient, HUZZAH! I love the two handles it includes too, YAY FOR MORE PLACES TO HANG MY CRAP.

Heart of House Sherbourne 12 Piece Dinner Set £17

I bloody love duck egg, it’s such a beautiful minimal colour and I enjoy its subtlety mucho. I don’t think I would ever buy a dinner set that doesn’t support this design, as I am such a messy pup and having the modern high sides helps me look high society whilst keeping my grub where it’s suppose to be!

I think I should stop here, otherwise I think I’ll get a bit carried away. I am so excited to start purchasing everything, and decorating my home with my bestest pal that I also give kisses to. What a great way to start 2017!

Also if anyone knows where I can get a huge banging soft rug hit me up because we (I) need all the help we (I) can get!
